Kenya is the very essence of an Africa safari with its archetypal savannah landscapes laden with wildlife. Its richly diverse geography and ecology straddle the equator, lapped by the warm Indian Ocean to the east, reaching the coast of Lake Victoria in the west. It also straddles time, with the Great Rift Valley running north to south, reaching back to the origins of man. The government of Kenya has gone to great trouble to protect its fine natural resources and the country is home to a large number of national parks with an astonishing variety of wildlife. The tremendous wildlife is the highlight of safari trips in Kenya. Wildlife in Kenya can be found almost anywhere, but the most popular game parks for safaris tend to be along the main road from Nairobi to Mombasa. Here you will find Amboseli, Chyulu Hills, Masai Mara and Tsavo East and West. That said, the game parks of Buffalo Springs, Samburu and Shaba in the north are also outstanding; an arid wilderness where game gathers to drink at the waters of the Ewaso N’yiro River, attracting large herds of elephants, leopards, gerenuk, oryx and giraffe.
The Kenya safari packages include one of Kenya’s best-loved reserves is the Masai Mara National Park, home to Africa’s largest population of lions and the staging ground of the great migration of wildebeest in July, one of the most spectacular natural events in the world. Tsavo (split into East and West) is the most easily accessible park from Mombasa, with some prime cheetah territory in Tsavo East while Galana riverbank is home to lions and crocs.
Kenya safaris from Nairobi include the famous Nairobi National Park. This park is Kenya’s first national park and remains one of the country’s greatest treasures with herds of zebra and giraffe, lion and rhino, just 20 minutes from the city centre. Northwest of Mount Kenya is the Laikipia ecosystem, a rolling 8000 square kilometre plateau of savannah, seasonal streams and bush. Some of the country’s very best eco-lodges are here and the remoteness is rewarded with rhino, wild dogs, elephants, lions, leopards and cheetahs, and the opportunity to walk or ride with expert guides.
To view exotic birds in Kenya, visit Lake Baringo which holds the world record for the number of different bird species seen in one day, while the Indian Ocean coastline with its 300 miles of pristine white sand coastline, calm, inviting waters and beautiful coral reefs is the perfect place to top or tail a safari and enjoy world class diving and snorkelling. The beaches are bordered by lush green coastal rainforest with prolific birdlife and a variety of wildlife including baboons, rare colobus monkeys and leopard.
